Resume Summary Examples

A resume summary is the two to four sentences under your name that say what you do, prove it with a number, and point at the job you want. Below are 42 original examples — an early-career and an experienced version for each of 21 jobs — and a free checker that tests your own summary against the same rules.

How do you write a resume summary?

  1. 01

    Say what you are

Open with your job title (or the one you're qualified for), years of experience and specialty: 'Telemetry nurse with 7 years…'. Not 'Seeking…', and not an adjective.

  2. 02

    Prove it once

Add the single result a hiring manager for this role cares most about, with a number: patients, revenue, accuracy, time saved, team size.

  3. 03

    Name what they'll search for

Finish with the licence, certification or tools the posting asks for, using its exact wording — that's what keyword searches in an applicant tracking system look for.

[ BEFORE AND AFTER ]

What does a weak summary look like, rewritten?

Before

I am a hardworking and detail-oriented professional seeking an opportunity to grow my skills in a dynamic company where I can make a difference.

After

Payroll specialist with 6 years processing biweekly payroll for 850 employees across 4 states in ADP Workforce Now. Cut off-cycle corrections from 30 a quarter to 6 by adding a pre-close audit checklist. Certified Payroll Professional (CPP).

  • Opens with a job title and years, not with what the writer wants.
  • Replaces two buzzwords with figures that prove the same traits.
  • Names the software, which is what a keyword search will look for.

Before

Experienced customer service rep with excellent communication skills and a passion for helping people. Team player who works well under pressure.

After

Customer service representative with 5 years of phone and chat support for a health insurer, handling 60 calls a day at a 95% quality score. Resolves billing and claims questions in Salesforce Service Cloud, in English and Spanish.

  • Swaps 'excellent communication skills' and 'team player' for volume and a quality score.
  • Says what kind of support: the industry and the questions handled.
  • Moves 'works well under pressure' out; 60 calls a day already shows it.

Before

Recent graduate looking for an entry-level role in marketing. Proficient in social media and Microsoft Office.

After

Marketing graduate (B.A., 2026) with a 6-month social media internship at a regional credit union, where weekly short-form videos grew Instagram followers from 2,100 to 5,800. Plans content in Later and reports results in GA4 and Excel.

  • Turns 'proficient in social media' into one internship with a before-and-after number.
  • Drops 'looking for': the job being applied for is the context already.
  • Lists specific tools instead of a generic office suite.

What should you leave out of a resume summary?

  • Buzzwords that assert a trait. “Results-driven”, “team player”, “detail-oriented”. Replace each with the number that would make a reader believe it.
  • Pronouns. Resume style implies the “I”. Pronouns cost words and our checkers flag them.
  • What you want instead of what you offer. “Seeking a challenging role” tells the reader nothing about you. If you need to signal a change of direction, do it in the last sentence.
  • Personal details. Age, marital status, nationality and photos don't belong here — or, in the US, anywhere on a resume.
  • A second experience section. If the summary runs past four sentences, the extra detail belongs in bullets under the job it came from.

Once the summary is right, run the whole resume through the free resume checker against the posting, or open one of the resume examples in the builder and replace its details with yours.

[ FAQ ]

Common questions

How long should a resume summary be?

Two to four sentences, roughly 30 to 70 words. Shorter than that and there is no room for a result; longer and it stops being a preview and starts repeating your experience section. Our resume checker treats any non-bullet paragraph over 70 words as a wall of text, so that is a useful ceiling.

What is the difference between a resume summary and an objective?

A summary says what you offer: your role, experience and a result. An objective says what you want: the kind of job you're looking for. Employers read your resume to decide what you bring, so a summary usually does more work. An objective-style line can still help when the change isn't obvious from your history — a career changer or a student — but keep it to the last sentence and tie it to the job.

Does every resume need a summary?

No. A summary earns its place when it adds something the rest of the page doesn't show in the first few seconds: a specialty, a licence, a headline result, or how your background fits a new direction. If yours only restates your latest job title, cut it and let the first role lead. For students and career changers, a short summary is usually worth it.

Should a resume summary be written in the first person?

Use implied first person: drop 'I', 'my' and 'we' and start with the noun or verb ('Payroll specialist with 6 years…', 'Cut off-cycle corrections…'). It's the standard resume style, it saves words, and our checkers flag the pronouns.

How do I tailor my resume summary to a job posting?

Match the job title in the posting if it's honestly yours, then pick the result that matters most for that role and the two or three tools or skills the posting repeats. Paste the posting into the summary checker on this page to see which of its top terms your summary already uses.

Can I copy these resume summary examples?

Borrow the structure, not the facts. Every example here is fictional: the employers, numbers and credentials are illustrations. Replace each detail with something true that you can talk about in an interview.
