Registered Nurse Resume Example
This nurse resume template leads with licensure, unit experience, and certifications so a recruiter can find them quickly. It places the RN license and BLS/ACLS credentials in clearly labelled sections, quantifies bedside experience — caseload, bed count, falls reduced, scan compliance — and uses common unit vocabulary such as telemetry, med-surg, Epic, and preceptor. Load it in the free builder and replace the details with your own.

What a registered nurse resume has to show in the first six seconds
Licensure first, always
Nurse recruiters confirm one thing before anything else: an active, unencumbered license in the hiring state (or compact eligibility). Put 'RN' after your name, the license type and state in the summary, and the number and status in a certifications or licensure block. Travel-nurse reviewers check compact status explicitly.
Unit type and bed count
'RN, 2019–present' says nothing a scheduler can use. Unit (telemetry, med-surg, ICU, L&D), facility size (450-bed acute care), patient ratio, and patient population let a recruiter match you to an opening in seconds. Magnet and teaching-hospital experience is worth naming outright.
Certifications with expiry years
BLS is assumed; ACLS, PALS, CCRN, TNCC, and NIHSS are differentiators depending on the unit. List issuer and year so credentialing can verify fast — expired certifications slow offers and occasionally rescind them.
EHR fluency named specifically
Epic and Cerner experience is a genuine filter at large systems because training is expensive. Name the system and, if true, modules you chart in (Epic Willow, Cerner PowerChart). 'Computer literate' earns nothing here.
Four ways registered nurse resumes get filtered out
✕ Burying the license and certifications at the bottom.
FIX → Credential checks happen first. Put 'RN' after your name, the license in your summary, and certifications in their own section above or beside experience.
✕ Generic duty bullets ('Provided patient care').
FIX → Every nurse provided patient care. Say what made yours measurable: ratios, bed counts, compliance percentages, falls reduced, committees chaired, preceptees trained.
✕ Listing expired certifications without dates.
FIX → Add the year to every credential. An undated BLS makes credentialing guess whether it is current — and guessing delays offers.
✕ One resume for ICU, med-surg, and clinic applications.
FIX → Reorder skills and rewrite the summary per unit type. An ICU application should lead with critical-care keywords; a clinic role should lead with triage, patient education, and ambulatory experience. The checker on this page shows the keyword gaps per posting.
Common questions
Should a nurse resume be one page or two?
One page can work for an early-career nurse; two pages can be appropriate with multiple unit types, certifications, and committee work. Length rules vary by employer, so keep every line focused on relevant clinical or leadership evidence rather than filler.
Where does my nursing license go?
In three places: after your name in the header ('Jessica Alvarez, RN'), stated in the summary with the state, and detailed in a Licensure & Certifications section with license number and status. Travel nursing adds compact-state eligibility in the same block.
Do I need a summary, or can I use an objective?
Use a summary. Objectives ('Seeking a challenging position…') waste the most-read line on the page. A summary states license, years, unit experience, and one headline achievement — the four facts a recruiter verifies first.
How do I handle employment gaps from leave or travel?
Name the gap briefly and factually ('Family leave 2023–2024', 'Travel RN contracts 2022–2023') and list travel assignments as their own entries with facility, unit, and dates. Gaps hidden by fuzzy dating draw more scrutiny than gaps stated plainly.
Will a two-column nurse template hurt me with hospital ATS?
It can, depending on the system. Older parsers sometimes read columns out of order, splitting your certifications from your license. Single-column layouts with standard headings (Experience, Education, Certifications) are the lowest-risk structure across the widest range of systems — that is what the builder's Classic and Compact templates produce.
How do I tailor this example to a specific posting?
Copy the example into the builder, replace the content with your own, then paste the job posting into the ATS checker. It lists the posting's keywords you are missing — add the truthful ones (say, 'telemetry' or 'Epic') to your skills and bullets, and re-scan. As a rough rule of thumb many people aim for a match around 80%, but there is no universal passing score — treat it as a 'looks strong' guideline, not a guarantee or a target every employer shares.
