Software Engineer Resume Example
This software engineer resume example follows an engineer growing from junior developer to senior owner of a checkout platform. It leads with a stack summary, quantifies every role — latency cuts, deploy-time reductions, cloud savings — and includes common posting terms such as TypeScript, React, AWS, Kubernetes, and microservices. Copy it into the free builder, swap in your numbers, and run the ATS check before you apply.

What a software engineer resume has to show in the first six seconds
The stack line, in the first third of the page
Engineering recruiters spend seconds deciding whether your stack overlaps their opening. Put the languages, frameworks, and cloud platforms you actually ship with near the top — in the summary and again in a skills block — so both the ATS keyword match and the human skim land in the first five seconds.
Scale numbers on every role
Requests per second, users, dollars processed, team size, latency before and after. 'Cut p95 latency from 620ms to 190ms' tells a hiring manager your bar; 'improved performance' tells them nothing. If you cannot measure it, estimate honestly and say what the estimate covers.
Ownership verbs, not participation verbs
Led, built, designed, drove, shipped — these read as ownership. 'Worked on', 'helped with', and 'was responsible for' read as participation. Senior screens in particular sort candidates by who owned outcomes versus who attended meetings.
Evidence of production responsibility
On-call rotations, uptime figures, incident work, and testing strategy signal that you have shipped software other people depend on. A resume that only describes features, never reliability, reads as junior regardless of years.
Four ways software engineer resumes get filtered out
✕ Listing every technology you have ever touched.
FIX → Cut the graveyard. A 30-item skills list dilutes the 8 the job posting actually names. Keep what you could defend in a technical interview this week.
✕ Describing duties instead of outcomes.
FIX → Rewrite 'Responsible for backend development' as 'Built and owned the billing API serving 4M requests/day'. Duty bullets answer what you were told to do; outcome bullets answer how well you did it.
✕ Two-column layouts and skill progress bars.
FIX → Some resume parsers can read columns out of order, and graphics may not preserve useful text. Use a single-column layout with plain text — the builder here defaults to exactly that.
✕ One generic resume for every application.
FIX → Mirror the posting's vocabulary: if it says 'Kubernetes' and you wrote 'k8s', spell it out; if it says 'CI/CD pipelines' and you wrote 'GitHub Actions', keep both. Run the checker on this page against the real posting to see the gaps.
Common questions
How long should a software engineer resume be?
One page can work well for an early career; two pages can be appropriate when the additional experience is relevant. Parsers do not award points simply for length, and a recruiter still needs to find the strongest evidence quickly. Cut your oldest or least relevant role before cutting recent detail.
Should I include a projects section?
Yes, when the projects carry weight the job history does not: open-source work with real users, a production side project, or significant contributions to known repositories. A tutorial clone from a weekend does not help and can read as padding. Link the repo; do not paste code.
Do ATS filters really reject resumes over keywords?
Large-company pipelines commonly rank or filter on keyword overlap before a human sees the file. The exact threshold varies by employer, but the safe play costs nothing: mirror the posting's exact terminology for your real skills and run a keyword check before submitting.
Where do certifications belong?
AWS, GCP, Azure, and CKA certifications go in a dedicated certifications section and again in skills if the posting names them. Expired certifications should be dropped or marked with the year held. For most engineering roles, a strong GitHub profile outweighs any certificate.
How do I tailor this example to a specific job posting?
Copy the example into the builder, replace the content with your own, then paste the job posting into the ATS checker. It lists the posting's keywords you are missing — add the truthful ones to your skills and bullets, and re-scan. As a rough rule of thumb many people aim for a match around 80%, but there is no universal passing score — treat it as a 'looks strong' guideline, not a guarantee or a target every employer shares.
