What a high school student resume has to show in the first six seconds

01

When you can work, stated plainly

Store, restaurant and summer-job managers hiring students are filling shifts, so availability is often the first thing they look for. One sentence in the summary — hours per week during the school year, and whether you can work weekends or full time in summer — answers it before they have to ask. Keep it accurate; a schedule you can't keep costs more than a shorter one.

02

Volunteering, clubs and sports count as experience

A first resume rarely has two paid jobs on it, and nobody expects it to. Tutoring, a club officer role, a team captaincy, regular babysitting or helping in a family business all had responsibilities and results. Give each one a title, dates and two or three bullets, exactly as you would a job. 'Treasurer, Robotics Club' with a managed budget reads as real responsibility.

03

A number in every bullet

Short resumes become believable through specifics: customers served per shift, hours volunteered, students tutored each week, dollars raised. 'Raised $1,450 for competition fees' says more about you than 'helped with fundraising'. Count something in every line — the checker on this site measures the share of bullets that contain a figure.

04

Education near the top, with what helps you

While you're still in school, education is a main qualification, so it sits right under the summary or straight after your first entry. Show the school, 'expected' with your graduation year, and the parts that strengthen the application — a strong GPA, honor roll, AP or dual-enrollment courses that match the job. Leave a GPA off if it doesn't help, and let coursework and activities speak instead.

[ COMMON MISTAKES ]

Four ways high school student resumes get filtered out

Leaving the page nearly empty because you haven't had a paid job.

FIX → List what you have done: volunteering, clubs, sports, babysitting, yard work, a family business, school projects with a real deadline. Each gets a title, dates and bullets with numbers. One honest, full page beats a half page with a single line under Experience.

Picking a template with a photo, icons, skill bars and two columns.

FIX → Use one column with plain headings: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills. Large employers usually take applications through online systems that read the text of your file, and a store manager reads a printed page in seconds. Graphics help neither. Save it as a PDF from a word processor or from our builder so the text stays selectable.

Applying from a nickname email address.

FIX → Create a free address with your name in it (firstname.lastname or a close variant) and use it for every application and school contact. Check it daily while you're applying, since interview invitations often arrive by email.

Listing everything since middle school.

FIX → Keep to high school, and to the activities that show responsibility, skill or commitment. A middle school award or a one-off event usually takes space a stronger line could use. The page should fit on one sheet without shrinking the font below 10 pt.

Common questions

How do I make a high school resume with no work experience?

Treat anything with responsibilities and results as experience: volunteering, club or class officer roles, sports, tutoring, babysitting, pet sitting, yard work or helping in a family business. Give each a title, the organization (or 'Self-employed'), dates and two or three bullets with numbers. Add an education section with your school and expected graduation year, a skills line with tools you can actually use, and a two-sentence summary that says when you can work.

Should I put my GPA on a high school resume?

Include it if it strengthens the application — a 3.5 or higher, or a recent upward trend you can show. If it doesn't help, leave it off; nobody expects a GPA on a resume for a part-time job, and honor roll, AP courses or a relevant class can carry the same signal.

What should a high school resume for college applications include?

Many college applications have their own activities section, so a resume is often optional — but it's useful for interviews, scholarships, summer programs and for teachers writing recommendations. For that audience, put education and academic honors first, then activities ranked by your commitment (years, hours per week, roles held), then work and volunteering, then skills. Keep it to one page and use the same facts as your application.

How long should a high school resume be?

One page. A manager hiring for a part-time role, or an admissions reader, spends very little time on each resume, and a second page at this stage usually means padding. If it won't fit, cut the weakest activity before you shrink the font.

Do I need references on my resume?

No. Leave them off the page, and skip the 'references available on request' line too. Keep a separate list of two or three people who know your work — a teacher, coach, club adviser or supervisor — with their permission, and hand it over when an employer asks.

Can I list babysitting or mowing lawns on my resume?

Yes. Present it as self-employed work with real numbers: 'Babysitter (Self-employed), 2024 – Present — care for 3 children across 2 families, 10 hours a week; trusted with school pickups and meal prep.' It shows reliability and responsibility, which is exactly what a first employer is trying to judge.

How do I tailor this example to a specific job posting?

Open the example in the builder, replace every detail with your own, then paste the job posting into the ATS checker. It lists the posting's words your resume is missing — add the true ones, such as 'cash handling' or 'food safety', to your skills and bullets, and re-scan. There is no universal passing score; use the list of missing terms as your guide.
